The Agreements Signed During The Ford Presidency That Promised
April 13, 2021
We think we can have a slight increase in education and not a larger increase. I assume Governor Carter has suggested that he approves a $30 billion spending by the federal government on education. Right now, we are spending about $3,500 million. I do not know where the money would come from. The immediate problem we have is to revive our economy now so that we can get rid of unemployment. What we have done is control spending in order to reduce the rate of inflation. And I think we have proven very conclusively that it is possible to reduce the rate of inflation and increase employment. But let us spend a minute with the South African operations that are now taking place. The United States of America has taken the lead in southern Africa.
We wanted to stop the bloodshed in southern Africa. We wanted the right to self-determination in southern Africa. We wanted a majority settlement with full protection of minority rights. We wanted to preserve human dignity in southern Africa. We have taken the initiative and in southern Africa the United States now trusts black nations and sub-Saharan Africa. The United States is familiar with other elements in southern Africa. Since many voters found Carter`s fracturing attractive in the wake of the Watergate scandal, it ultimately benefited Carter. Ford was not personally linked to Watergate, but many were seen as too close to the discredited Nixon administration; Ford himself continued to support this view by granting Nixon a presidential pardon for any crimes he might have committed during his tenure. As a result of the grace, his popularity plummeted in opinion polls. Ford`s refusal to publicly explain the reasons for Nixon`s pardon only damaged his image (although he made a statement later in his memoirs). His son Jack Ford gave an interview in 1976 in which he explained that his father felt that he had “nothing to prove” about Nixon`s pardon and therefore did not feel compelled to talk about it. That`s what the American people want.
If something is happening that endangers our security, or if something is happening that threatens our reputation in the world, or if the American people are put at risk by the actions of a foreign country, only 40 sailors on the Mayaguez, we must of course move aggressively and quickly to save them.
